Variation

Add a random series shock to both teams

Variation creates different plausible paths when ratings are close. It does not simulate individual possessions, games, injuries, or a calibrated upset probability.

A wide gap maps to a shorter series and a narrow gap maps to six or seven games. This is a presentation rule, not a fitted NBA series model.

Bracket integrity

Prepare sixteen rows that map to real seed positions

Use seeds one through eight once

Each conference must contain exactly eight unique seeds. The tool sorts rows by seed before pairing 1-8, 4-5, 3-6, and 2-7.

Use distinct team names

A duplicate label makes copied results hard to audit. Include a city or another identifier when two entries might otherwise share a short name.

Keep one rating scale

A five-point difference must mean the same thing across both conferences if the Finals comparison is meant to be coherent.

Update the confirmed field

Play-in outcomes and official seeding can change the eight-team bracket. Replace placeholders only after the applicable positions are set.

Record the research date

Team availability and performance evidence change. Add a timestamp to a copied scenario so an older bracket is not mistaken for a current view.

Separate scenario from result

Once a series is complete, record the official winner outside this projection. Do not rewrite a prior prediction and present it as the original call.

First round

Check matchup style, rotation availability, home court, schedule, and whether a rating built across the season reflects current play.

Conference semifinals

Replace hypothetical opponents with actual winners when updating the bracket. A team can match differently against another path.

Conference finals

Review workload, travel, injuries, and tactical evidence from prior rounds. Do not carry an opening-day score forward without review.

NBA Finals

Confirm that both conference ratings remain comparable and that the model did not double-count seed or home-court effects.

Scenario comparison

Use multiple runs to expose fragile picks

Baseline run

Use deterministic ratings with no variation. This shows the direct order implied by the data and seed influence.

Low-variation run

Add a small shock and repeat several times. A matchup that flips often is sensitive to small assumed differences.

High-variation run

Use only as a stress test. Large random shocks produce dramatic paths but should not be mistaken for a more accurate model.

Availability scenario

Reduce a rating according to a documented injury or rotation assumption, label the change, and compare the downstream bracket.

Home-court scenario

Change seed influence only when the rating does not already contain that advantage. Double counting makes higher seeds artificially strong.

Alternative rating scenario

Run another complete rating method rather than mixing selected team numbers from several sources. Agreement across methods is more informative than cherry-picking.

A bracket that changes after a one-point rating adjustment is not useless; it reveals a close decision. Copy both outcomes and name the assumption that separates them. A bracket that remains stable across reasonable inputs may be more resilient, but an unexpected game result can still overturn it.

Preserve the model before games begin

Inputs

Save every seed, team, rating, seed-influence setting, variation setting, and date. A champion name alone cannot show why the model selected that path.

Random run identifier

Variation mode cannot be reconstructed from settings alone unless the random sequence is seeded. Treat each run as a separate scenario and copy the complete bracket.

Outcome review

Compare predicted and official series winners after completion. Review whether misses came from close ratings, stale inputs, matchup blind spots, availability changes, or normal sports uncertainty.

Do not grade a model only by the champion. A bracket can choose the final winner while missing many series, or miss the champion after making several strong close calls. Track accuracy by round, confidence gap, and the information available at prediction time. Keep revisions as new versions rather than overwriting the earlier record.

Build one number without hiding its assumptions

Choose the sample window

A full-season rating has more games but may understate a recent lineup change. A short window responds faster but carries more shooting and opponent noise. Save the chosen date range.

Adjust for opponent quality

Raw win percentage can reward a favorable schedule. Use a method that treats performance against strong and weak opponents consistently across both conferences.

Separate offense and defense

Two teams can reach the same combined rating through different profiles. Keep component notes because a particular opponent can challenge those profiles differently.

State availability assumptions

Name which rotation players are active, limited, or absent. A rating based on games with another lineup should be adjusted only through a declared method.

Avoid double counting

If the rating already includes home performance, seed, recent form, and availability, do not add all of them again through the seed slider or manual edits.

Normalize the scale

The absolute value can be arbitrary, but differences must remain comparable. A three-point gap should carry the same intended meaning for every possible series.

A favored team may prefer one possible opponent and struggle with another. Recalculate downstream series from the actual winner rather than keeping a preselected conference path.

Availability change

Injuries and returns affect later rounds

A player unavailable now may return, while another may be limited after a series. Date every updated rating rather than treating the opening bracket as permanent.

Playoff possessions reveal new evidence

Coaching adjustments, rotation choices, and matchup performance can support a new scenario. Keep it as a revision, not an edited original.

A full bracket is convenient for a pre-playoff contest, but round-by-round forecasting answers a different question with more information. Label each output by the moment it was made. Comparing those versions shows how much the path changed because of results and how much changed because of new assumptions.
