How to read a Pokemon type matchup

A type matchup tells you how an attacking move interacts with a defending Pokemon's type or type combination. A single type can be weak to one attack and resist another. A dual type multiplies both defensive results together. That is why Water/Ground is famously immune to Electric, weak to Grass, and strong into many common coverage choices. One type can erase a weakness, double it, or create a full immunity.

This calculator is built for quick decisions. The selected attack result answers one immediate question: what happens if this move hits this defender? The weakness, resistance, and immunity lists answer a bigger team-building question: what kinds of attacks pressure this Pokemon, and what can it safely switch into? Both views matter. A Pokemon can resist many types and still be risky if one popular attack hits it for 4x damage.

2x and 4x weakness

A 4x weakness usually demands careful positioning because even weaker coverage moves can threaten a knockout.

0.5x and 0.25x resistance

Resistances create switch-in opportunities, especially when paired with strong recovery or defensive stats.

0x immunity

Immunities are powerful because they can block a predicted move entirely and change the tempo of a turn.

How to build better coverage

Coverage is not about hitting every type super effectively. It is about hitting the threats your team actually invites. If your main attacker struggles with Steel types, one strong Ground or Fire coverage move may be more valuable than a random high-power neutral move. If your team already pressures Dragon types, adding another Dragon answer may be less urgent than covering Fairy or Ice.

When checking defense, look for shared weaknesses across the whole team. One Pokemon weak to Ground is manageable. Four Pokemon weak to Ground is a structural problem. How does a dual-type Pokemon weakness work?

The two defensive type modifiers multiply together. If one type is weak to an attack and the other resists it, the result is usually neutral. If both are weak, the result is 4x damage. If either type is immune, the result is 0x.

What is a Pokemon immunity?

An immunity means the attacking move type does no damage under normal type-chart rules. For example, Ground does not hit Flying and Electric does not hit Ground.

Can a Pokemon resist and be weak to the same move type?

Yes, with dual types. One type can resist while the other is weak. The result often becomes neutral because 0.5x multiplied by 2x equals 1x.

What is the difference between weakness and coverage?

Weakness describes what threatens a Pokemon defensively. Coverage describes the attacking move types your team uses to hit opponents effectively.

Does this include abilities?

No. This tool focuses on the type chart. Abilities, held items, move rules, weather, and field effects can change a real battle and should be checked separately.

Why is 4x weakness so important?

A 4x weakness doubles a normal super-effective hit. Even a moderate coverage move can become dangerous, especially if the defender lacks speed, recovery, or a safe switch partner.

Team-building checklist

After checking one type combination, compare the result with the rest of the team. Repeated weaknesses are more dangerous than isolated weaknesses because they make prediction easier for the opponent. If three team members dislike Ground, the opponent may click Ground coverage with very little risk. If your team has no safe switch into Fairy, Dragon, Ice, or Fighting, a strong attacker of that type can force trades every time it appears.

Balance also depends on role. A frail attacker can accept more weaknesses if it rarely switches in. A defensive pivot needs a cleaner resistance profile because it enters the field repeatedly. Type math should support the job each Pokemon is meant to perform.
